Homeless Animals Protection Society (HAPS)

Ethiopia

HAPS is founded in October 29, 2001 to work through out the country to help the animals and solve the problem with the help of ANIMAL PEOPLE, USA and it is the first of its kind in Ethiopia.

After its establishment it has worked around the Bale Mountains National Park /BMNP/ where there are many endemic animals and Birds species are found, and one of which is the Endangered Ethiopian Wolf.

Its main target was to protect the homeless dogs that were shot and poisoned by the name of saving the Ethiopian wolf from threat of extinction due to rabies and hybridization with domestic dog. Shooting and poisoning of homeless dogs were never saved the Ethiopian wolf from rabies for the past several years as some homeless dogs escape and change their behavior and become wild.

Then HAPS came out with the idea of Animal Birth Control /ABC/ through Trap Neuter Release /TNR/ and awareness raising towards pet handling in order to control the population of homeless dogs and also rabies through vaccination.

At the moment HAPS is working in the capital City of Ethiopia Addis Ababa by convincing the directly concerned government bodies, that the ABC program through the TNR method can fully replace poisoning in order to control the population of homeless dogs in the city and signed the tripartite operational agreement.
