DogAid Australia was established in March 2001 and is
based in Victoria, Australia. The groups’ primary aim is to contribute
to the total and complete ban of the use of torture in the preparation
of companion animals for slaughter and to contribute to bringing about
an end to the consideration of dogs and cats as livestock suitable for
human and non-human consumption.
Though DogAids’ aim is to bring attention to the
plight of dogs and cats in the South Korean dog and cat meat industry, the
group also concerns itself with the welfare of companion animals trapped
in other Nations dog and cat meat trades, these include but are not
limited to, China, The Philippines and Vietnam.
DogAid Australia is an unregistered group supported by International Aid
for Korean Animals, an internationally registered society based in
California, USA. International Aid for Korean Animals seeks to bring a
speedy and permanent end to the use of companion animals for meat, and to
urge the South Korean Government to introduce new and aggressive language
into the existing weak 1991 Animal Protection Law to prevent the brutal
torture of companion animals in the dog and cat meat trade.
Millions of dogs and cats endure vicious acts of violence and barbaric
cruelty each year in South Korea. Those acts of violence include,
hangings, beatings, boiling, burning and skinning whilst animals are alive
and fully conscious. Butchers continue to promote meat from tortured dogs
to be a sexual stimulant and a cure for the summer heat and the juice of
cats to be a tonic to relieve the affects of arthritis. These claims have
been disproved by prominent Korean scientists and have no basis in fact at
all.
DogAid supports the assertion of International Aid for Korean Animals that
dog and cat meat is not a part of Korean culture, only that it is a habit
developed after the Korean War when starvation forced people to consume
companion animals. Furthermore, DogAid holds that if such a culture did
exist, that it has no place in a modern and civilized world and that a
Nations dietary habits cannot be considered part of it’s culture.
DogAid rejects any claims of racism or Western imperialism in their
campaign by dog meat advocates and recognizes this tactic as an attempt to
cloud the issue, to incite anger and resentment through the use of
propaganda and lies and gain the support of uninformed citizens who would
not, if aware of the truth, stand on the side of brutality.
DogAid wishes to see dogs and cats find a place of respect and reverence
among the Korean populace and so supports the International Aid for Korean
Animals position on the total abolition of the dog and cat meat trade, not
solely the barbaric practices the industry promotes. DogAid recognizes
these brutalized dogs and cats to be VICTIMS of crime and those that
brutalize them to be criminals and mentally aberrant individuals who must
be called to account for their actions and upon failure to justify any act
of cruelty, as no act of cruelty is justifiable, must receive a punishment
befitting their crime.
DogAid does not accept monetary donations and asks that donations be
directed to International Aid for Korean Animals and the Korean Animal
protection Society based in South Korea (See
www.koreananimals.org)
instead, the group engages in letter and email writing campaigns, holds
regular demonstrations and stalls, speaks out on radio, encourages the
media to broadcast the truth of the situation, gathers support through the
Internet and phone calls and spreads awareness through various other means
to gain support for their campaign to end the slaughter and the terrifying
acts of violence perpetrated against companion animals.
