Something some guys but few other males in the animal kingdom have thought of: It acts like a good dad.Sand gobies, small fish native to the European coast, are among about 20 percent of fish families worldwide that display some form of care for eggs or hatchlings. But in recent experiments a team reports that male sand gobies work harder at building nests and taking care of eggs when females are present - the first time such “courtship parental care” has been documented in any species... (11/06/2004) France: Liberté will liveThe organization One Voice saved a cow from the butcher On 7 June 2004 one special cow on her way to the slaughterhouse in Auch may still have been called by another name but when she saved herself from the threatening death machinery by a jump into a garden, she became Liberté (liberty), a symbol for billions of animals, which are sacrificed each year on the altar of the human greed for meat. The cow was caught immediately but was too scared and stressed for slaughtering so that, in the interest of the meat quality, the killing was postponed. The French animal protection organization One Voice was informed about the incident and immediately contacted the slaughterhouse and the mayor of Auch with a request to buy the animal.Since the only reaction received was ridicule, One Voice asked activists and direct and indirect contact people and organizations to spread the work in a flash-action. So a lot of mails went out pleading for the life of the cow, sometimes with very moving texts: "Even if we cannot save all animals from slaughtering, let us fight for the life of this cow with all our energy."... (18/06/2004) Animals mindsDo animals have minds of their own, and if they do, what might they be like? It is an innocent-sounding question, but one that has provoked tremendous strife among scientists and non-scientists alike. Try telling a dog-lover that their pet is devoid of personality. Yet there are those who insist that only humans have minds worthy of the name, because it is only humans who have complex language. Others apply the definition to humans and some other primates. Others still ascribe a mind of some description to all animals, and claim we just need more research to determine what sort of minds they have. Now we are on the verge of a revolution that may settle the question... [Link]

(Notice) Protest in favor of a dolphinarium-free BelgiumWhen? Sunday, 11 July at 2 pmWhere? Dolphinarium, Boudewijnpark, BrugesWithin the scope of the international week of dolphins in captivity, GAIA, together with Ric O'Barry (Marine Mammal Specialist and the former trainer of Flipper) and other organizations, will organize on the 11th of July in a peaceful protest in front of the Bruges dolphinarium. Dolphins are extremely sensitive, social and intelligent creatures that cannot possibly be held decently in captivity. Dolphins living in captivity in basins are exposed to a lot of stress and many of their diseases are a direct consequence of this.Normally dolphins live and hunt in close-knit family units with a very complex social structure. In dolphinaria they are being isolated in empty, often too small basins, and are fed dead fish. While wild dolphins can swim up to 80 kilometers a day and often dive to depths of 300 meters, it is perfectly legal according to the Belgian law to keep 3 to 5 bottle nose dolphins in a basin of 275 m2 and 3,5 m deep. We want Belgium to follow Great Britain’s example, and become dolphinarium-free. GAIA has worked together with Ric O'Barry before in a protest favoring the closing down of the Antwerp dolphinarium. In 1998 the Antwerp dolphinarium permanently closed down. All are welcome to participate in this peaceful protest at the Bruges dolphinarium.

The chef draped the lobster's torso with a white napkin, cloaking the barbaric exercise in civility, and left it atop the sushi display case while he carried off the tail to fix it. While the chef was gone, we sipped our sake and imagined the treat in store. How would he prepare the tail? And then, to our dismay, the cloth napkin started to crawl around, threatening to tumble off the display case.
