(O1/06/2004) BSE outbreak in sheep could lead to cull of 25m animals

Nightmare scenario for farms if disease jumps species.

Up to 25 million sheep, two-thirds of the national flock, might be destroyed if the nightmare of BSE spreading from cattle to sheep were proved to have occurred.

Contingency plans which were published by the government yesterday made clear there would be severe shortages of lamb until farmers could breed flocks resistant to BSE and similar diseases... [Link]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - U.S. officials said on Thursday they are granting special protection to a small group of Alaska killer whales that have dwindled in number since some members were seen swimming through oil from the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill.

The AT-1 killer whales, which bear distinctive black and white markings, make special calls to each other and differ genetically from other whales, have been designated as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the National Marine Fisheries Service said... [Link]

(05/06/2004) GALAPAGOS UNDER SIEGE!

Reported by Captain Paul Watson 1800 hrs. PST (Darwin Research Station, Santa Cruz & Isabella Islands, Galapagos, Ecuador)

Sea Shepherd crew members held hostage by angry mob of fishermen demanding unrestricted exploitation of Sea Cucumbers

The offices of the National Park on Santa Cruz Island and the offices of the National Park on Isabella Island have been taken over by angry mobs of fishermen. Also taken were the island of Espanola and the tourist sites there. The mob is armed with clubs, lead pipes, & Molotov cocktails. Our unarmed Sea Shepherd Crew had a standoff lasting hours until just recently when the rangers & all persons were ordered out by the Ministry of the Environment, basically leaving the office in the hands of the Mob. Some of the Marines & the Police are still there but it's a very touchy situation. Apparently there is help coming from the mainland.

However, our Sea Shepherd crew on Isabella Island is still being held hostage there, and that includes citizens from America, Canada, New Zealand and Switzerland. There has been no word from them at the time of this release. People are getting weary of this mob rule. anytime the fishermen make demands; they simply use violence to get what they want. They were given a quota of 4 million sea cucumbers, that's not enough for them, even though the scientists have said that none was too many. Now the fishermen are demanding unrestricted exploitation which is an impossible demand. The fact is that the Galapagos Islands are a World Heritage site. We all have a responsibility to protect them, not just the Ecuadorians! We possibly protect natural resources that don't have even this so called "protection".

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is asking that people write, fax, or e-mail the Ecuadorian government through the embassies in their countries and demand that the government stand up to the mob of violent thugs terrorizing the Galapagos.

LONDON - Ducks quack to each other in regional dialects, with London ducks brashly drowning out their relaxed rural relatives, a researcher says.

Victoria de Rijke of Middlesex University compared ducks in central London to peers in quiet, rural Cornwall as part of her academic quest to answer the crucial question: 'Do ducks quack in the same way all over the world?'

(08/06/2004) Male sand gobies play "Mum" to woo a partner

What's a little male fish's secret weapon for attracting the lady fish? Something some guys but few other males in the animal kingdom have thought of: It acts like a good dad.

Sand gobies, small fish native to the European coast, are among about 20 percent of fish families worldwide that display some form of care for eggs or hatchlings. But in recent experiments a team reports that male sand gobies work harder at building nests and taking care of eggs when females are present - the first time such “courtship parental care” has been documented in any species... (09/06/2004) Environmentalists Seek Ban on Bottom Trawl Fishing

UNITED NATIONS - Environmental groups urged the United Nations yesterday to ban so-called bottom trawl fishing in international waters, calling the practice the most destructive fishing practice on the high seas.

In bottom trawling, fishing boats drag massive nets along the ocean bottom in extremely deep water near underwater mountains known as seamounts, destroying the corals, sponges and deep-sea habitats in their paths... [Link]

BARCELONA, Spain - The United Nations urged the creation of ocean parks to protect depleted fish stocks on the weekend as activists marked World Environment Day by freeing turtles, planting trees and decrying global warming. QUITO, Ecuador - Fishermen in Ecuador's pristine Galapagos islands yesterday called off a protest demanding more leeway in lucrative sea cucumber fishing after the government agreed to hold talks on new rules limiting their catch.

(11/06/2004) France: Liberté will live

The organization One Voice saved a cow from the butcher On 7 June 2004 one special cow on her way to the slaughterhouse in  Auch may still have been called by another name but when she saved  herself from the threatening death machinery by a jump into a garden, she became Liberté (liberty), a symbol for billions of animals, which are sacrificed each year on the altar of the human greed for meat.

The cow was caught immediately but was too scared and stressed for  slaughtering so that, in the interest of the meat quality, the killing was postponed.

The French animal protection organization One Voice was informed about the incident and immediately contacted the slaughterhouse and the mayor of Auch with a request to buy the animal.

Since the only reaction received was ridicule, One Voice asked  activists and direct and indirect contact people and organizations to spread the work in a flash-action. So a lot of mails went out pleading for the life of the cow, sometimes with very moving texts: "Even if we cannot save all animals from slaughtering, let us fight for the life of this cow with all our energy."... (18/06/2004) Animals minds

Do animals have minds of their own, and if they do, what might they be like? It is an innocent-sounding question, but one that has provoked tremendous strife among scientists and non-scientists alike. Try telling a dog-lover that their pet is devoid of personality. Yet there are those who insist that only humans have minds worthy of the name, because it is only humans who have complex language. Others apply the definition to humans and some other primates. Others still ascribe a mind of some description to all animals, and claim we just need more research to determine what sort of minds they have. Now we are on the verge of a revolution that may settle the question... [Link]

(19/06/2004) Alaska Men Admit Poaching Bear Organs

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Three Anchorage men implicated in a plot to illegally sell black bear organs to buyers in South Korea have pleaded guilty to poaching and other federal charges, officials said yesterday.

Kwan Su Yi, Tae Won Ro and James Moon admitted setting bear traps in 2002 and killing at least nine bears around the shores of Prince William Sound for the purpose of cutting out their gallbladders, federal officials said. They intended to sell the bear parts to buyers in South Korea, where they would be used for medicinal purposes, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Skrocki.

The men were arrested after biologists found one dead bear in a salmon stream and state troopers discovered a cooler filled with bear gallbladders. Bear organ poaching may be occurring on a larger scale in the lush forests near Prince William Sound, Skrocki said. Federal officials say 50 more bears might have fallen prey to poachers, who can sell black bear gallbladders for up to $5,000 in Korea... [Link]

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - The effort to reunite a lonely orca with its family was disrupted on Wednesday by native Indian protesters who believe the animal is the spirit of a dead chief and do not want it to leave.

The toddler's mother was shocked to find the beast in her bed and ran to a neighbor for help.   "(We) were sitting in the living room and all of a sudden we heard a terrible clamor and clatter, as if an earthquake had begun," Mari Lahti told Finnish tabloid Ilta-Sanomat. (Notice) Protest in favor of a dolphinarium-free Belgium

When? Sunday, 11 July at 2 pm

Where? Dolphinarium, Boudewijnpark, Bruges

Within the scope of the international week of dolphins in captivity, GAIA, together with Ric O'Barry (Marine Mammal Specialist and the former trainer of Flipper) and other organizations, will organize on the 11th of July in a peaceful protest in front of the Bruges dolphinarium. Dolphins are extremely sensitive, social and intelligent creatures that cannot possibly be held decently in captivity. Dolphins living in captivity in basins are exposed to a lot of stress and many of their diseases are a direct consequence of this.

Normally dolphins live and hunt in close-knit family units with a very complex social structure. In dolphinaria they are being isolated in empty, often too small basins, and are fed dead fish. While wild dolphins can swim up to 80 kilometers a day and often dive to depths of 300 meters, it is perfectly legal according to the Belgian law to keep 3 to 5 bottle nose dolphins in a basin of 275 m2 and 3,5 m deep. We want Belgium to follow Great Britain’s example, and become dolphinarium-free. GAIA has worked together with Ric O'Barry before in a protest favoring the closing down of the Antwerp dolphinarium. In 1998 the Antwerp dolphinarium permanently closed down. All are welcome to participate in this peaceful protest at the Bruges dolphinarium.

(2) Religion/Philosophy

- The following is a 30 second elevator introduction to Jainism:
Jainism is a religion and a way of live. For thousands of years, Jains have been practicing vegetarianism, yoga, mediation, and environmentalism. Jains believe in the existence of Soul - in each living being - which is eternal and divine. Jain philosophy has three core practices: Non-Violence, Non-Absolutism, and Non-Possessiveness.

Non-Violence is compassion and forgiveness in thoughts, words, and deeds towards all living beings. For this reason, Jains are vegetarians.

Non- Absolutism is respect for and seeking others’ views. Jains encourage dialogue and harmony with other faiths.

Non-Possessiveness is balancing of needs and desires, while staying detached from these possessions.

We are all interdependent on each other and we can bring peace to our lives and to those around us. Jains seek spiritual upliftment by practicing Non-Violence, Non-Absolutism, and Non-Possessiveness.

The chef draped the lobster's torso with a white napkin, cloaking the barbaric exercise in civility, and left it atop the sushi display case while he carried off the tail to fix it. While the chef was gone, we sipped our sake and imagined the treat in store. How would he prepare the tail? And then, to our dismay, the cloth napkin started to crawl around, threatening to tumble off the display case. Horrified, we kept poking the napkin back so it wouldn't fall, but we couldn't bear to raise the napkin and set eyes on half a lobster dragging itself around by its front claws… http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/pickover/pc/extreme_eating.html

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Scientists have long studied haunting whale songs, but now they are investigating what the whales make of ocean noises to determine whether freighters, military sonars and oil drilling are harming the giant mammals.

"We actually know very little about the way whales perceive sound and use sound," said Michael Noad, the scientist at the University of Queensland who heads the U.S.-navy funded study.

Scientists and green groups have voiced concern over the impact on whales and other sea mammals of sounds generated by shipping, the military and oil rigs, Noad said Friday... [Link]

(30/06/2004) Scandal of Factory Farmed Pheasants

Chicks Reared in Appalling Conditions before being Released on Shooting Estates

Eating game is no longer the preserve of the landed classes. Celebrity chefs, restaurants and supermarkets have been busy promoting pheasant and partridge as healthy, free-range alternatives for those seeking the real taste of the English countryside.

But an undercover investigation by animal campaigners has revealed a hidden side to the industrial breeding of game birds. It exposes appalling conditions in which millions of young pheasants are kept before they are sold to shooting estates.

Investigators posing as casual farm workers took secret film that showed how at some farms chicks are kept in cramped, overcrowded conditions with little access to daylight or outdoor exercise. In scenes reminiscent of intensive battery farms, thousands of young birds die or end up with deformities. Many chicks are pecked to death by other pheasants. It is estimated that more than 1.5 million chicks die on farms each year before they are dispatched to shooting estates... [Link]
